Holybourne Gardening Club

The Holybourne Gardeners Club is a group of locals with a shared interest in gardening. We aim to meet regularly on the 4th Tuesday of the month in various locations. Occasionally in the pub or the village hall, but in the summer it is nice to visit members gardens for our meetings. Please see this year’s programme as found in the Winter 2025 Edition of the Village Magazine.

The present subscription is £24 p.a. or £3 per meeting if you just want a taster. Anyone is welcome to join to share ideas and general passion for gardening. For the best contact and discussion there is a WhatsApp group (Holybourne Gardening Club). The easiest way to join is to put a request on the Holybourne Hub group where an admin will pick it up. You can then join in to all the chat and get tips, perhaps swap plants and other gardening items.

Our April meeting will be at Judith Stephens garden in Binsted, meeting there at 6:30pm – see WhatsApp Group for details.

27th January was an excellent evening with a talk by Geoff Hawkins on “Shrubs, the backbone of the Garden” – giving you some ideas of which shrubs you could use in your garden to give structure, shape and texture as well as colour through flowers, stems and foliage.’

Activities:-

The border development at Andrews Endowed. We had a great morning cutting back and clearing the beds. They are almost ready to be planted up now. There is now a lot of space to be filled.  The border runs SE to NW, is about 2 metres deep and the accessible bit is about 10 metres long. A working party was set up by Charlie Waters in half term (16-20 February).

In early March a select group of four this morning went to the vineyard at Otium at Hartley Mauditt, and learnt how to prune the vines. We were given a lovely welcome cup of coffee and cake then braved the drizzle. We managed to prune one row of vines, sort of successfully- time will tell if we got it right! Of course after we had finished the sun came out as we walked back to bid farewell and head home!
